There’s a certain frequency that runs through South London at night. It’s raw, it’s authentic, and it belongs to the artists pouring their souls out on stage.
But lately, finding a place to properly experience that energy without paying extortionate Central London prices has become harder and harder.
And even when you do find a good gig, you’re usually faced with a frustrating choice:
great music with terrible drinks, or great drinks somewhere else entirely.
Too many music venues treat the bar as an afterthought. A couple of tired lagers, a basic house wine, and prices that make you wonder why you bothered leaving the house in the first place.
We always thought that made no sense.
Why should you have to choose between a proper drink and a proper night of live music?
So we decided to build the place where you don’t have to.
That place is The Blue Monk.
Located right in the heart of the Bermondsey Beer Mile at 71 Enid Street, The Blue Monk is a dedicated haven for live jazz, blues, rock, and indie music. But it’s also a bar that takes its drinks just as seriously as its music.
Because for us, the two should always go hand in hand.
The Story Behind the Name
The name The Blue Monk actually comes from a place thousands of miles away.
We were living out in upstate New York and we used to visit this dive bar in Buffalo called The Blue Monk. It wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t trying too hard. But it had something special.
The atmosphere was electric, the crowd was always interesting, and the drinks list was legendary, especially the Belgian beers.
It was one of those rare places where the bar itself felt like a discovery. A place where you could walk in for “just one drink” and end up staying the whole night.
That idea stuck with us.
When it came time to open our own venue in London, we wanted to capture a bit of that spirit, the warmth, the atmosphere, the sense of community, and the belief that a bar can be as memorable as the music playing inside it.
So The Blue Monk in Bermondsey is our homage to that little dive bar in Buffalo.
Different city. Same philosophy. Also, Go Bills.
The Sound: Pristine, Acoustically-Treated Audio
Of course, great drinks mean nothing if the music itself isn’t treated properly.
We’ve all been to those gigs where the band is squeezed into a corner of a noisy pub and the speakers are so blown out you can barely tell what song is being played.
We wanted something very different.
Our 150-capacity gig room has been custom acoustically treated from top to bottom and fitted with top-tier, stadium-quality audio equipment.
That means when an artist steps onto our stage, you hear exactly what they intended.
Whether you’re right up against the stage for a heavy indie rock set or sitting back listening to a late-night jazz trio, every note comes through clean, warm, and powerful.
Because if artists are brave enough to put themselves out there on stage, they deserve a room that lets them sound their best.
The Drinks: Serious Craft Beer, Fair Prices
Just as importantly, we wanted the bar to be something worth talking about too.
We’ve all had that moment at a gig where you walk up to the bar, see a tiny selection of mass-produced lagers, and then get hit with an £8 pint.
That’s exactly the kind of experience we wanted to fix.
Being located right on the legendary Bermondsey Beer Mile means we’re surrounded by some of the best brewers in London. So it only made sense to take full advantage of that.
At The Blue Monk, we proudly pour beautifully brewed UK craft beers for just £6 a pint, alongside a carefully curated selection of wines and spirits.
It’s the kind of drinks list you’d expect from a serious bar, not something thrown together as an afterthought for a music venue.
Because again, we believe you shouldn’t have to choose.
You should be able to discover your new favourite band while drinking your new favourite beer.
The Vibe: Accessible, Authentic, and Yours
At its core, The Blue Monk is a place built by music lovers, for music lovers.
We wanted to create a venue that felt welcoming, relaxed, and genuinely part of the local scene, somewhere you could pop in for a casual drink or stay all night watching incredible artists.
There’s no pretentiousness, no ridiculous door policies, and no inflated ticket prices.
Most of our gigs sit under £10 a ticket, because live music should be something people can experience regularly, not just on special occasions.
